special dispensations is a vending machine residency programme for artists based in norwich, uk
HOW DOES IT WORK?
selected artists take over special dispensations, a vending machine, for a calendar month. during this month they create and distribute works on paper via the vending machine. these works could be stickers, prints, minizines, editions, drawings, or anything else that the machine is able to dispense!
we will provide cardboard sleeves which protect the works as they are being dispensed. any works included in the machine must fit entirely within these sleeves, or it could cause damage. specifications for works which are eligible for vending can be found here.
the machine will be accessible to the artist once per week, to restock, manage inventory or change the display image. access at other times can be organised on request. special dispensations is a blank canvas, and can be customised in any (reversible!) way the artist sees fit.
the artist keeps 50% of the revenue from the machine during the residency, with the remaining 50% split between administrative costs and venue fees. this allows us to keep the machine operational!
WHERE IS IT?
special dispensations has found a home in central Norwich, in a venue which will be announced in the coming weeks
if you are someone with a venue, exhibition, event or other space who would like to host special dispensations, do email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss.
CAN I CHANGE HOW MUCH EACH WORK COSTS?
unfortunately the mechanism is limited, so we are only able to price works at 50p per piece, of which the artist will receive 25p. please take this into consideration when choosing suppliers or printers, and think creatively about how works could be drawn or reproduced using low-cost methods.
special dispensations does not currently receive any funding, so is unable to offer any artist fee outside of the revenue generated from the sale of works. if you are prohibitied from participating due to printing costs, note this in the proposal email and we can investigate the possibility of printing in-house to reduce overheads.
CAN I TAKE PART REMOTELY?
to ensure this opportunity is open to as many artists as possible, we have a remote participation option which involves sending via email or post the items you wish to display in special dispensations. these must meet strict criteria in order to be dispensable - details here. for a remote residency, we will also need the artist to provide a display image for the front of the machine, or instructions on how they would like to present it.
HOW DO I GET PAID?
we make payments on a weekly basis, in arrears, for both the in-person and remote residency paths. we will also provide a full weekly summary of revenue via email. to ensure speedy payment, please provide PayPal or UK bank account details at the time of selection.
