ED SCHRADER'S MUSIC BEAT - RIDDLES

this album was very easy to love. anything produced by dan deacon is always going to be something to behold and riddles is absolutely no exception - effortlessly taking you on a dirty journey through all the sounds you wish you were allowed to make, and then back to the ones you do without thinking anyway
i saw the live show incarnation of this record at moth club way back in i think may, in a totally nowhere-near-sold-out-but-full-of-crazy-passion kinda setup, and they let me paypal them for a t-shirt cos i didn't have any cash which was chill. i found myself wishing they'd had space for a little dan deacon on their tourbus cos it was all done to a backing track and i wanted to see the magic happen rather than just being AWARE that magic HAD HAPPENED AT SOME POINT and i was now experiencing the product of said magic
FAV TRACK: RIDDLES (but also DUNCE but RIDDLES is too good to not have as this pick. i guess thats why it's the lead single)
JEFF ROSENSTOCK - POST-
i didn't know but apparently everyone's been on the jeff rosenstock wagon for-freakin-ever, and now i see why cos this album is a god damn masterpiece? this has been my go-to music for whenever i have to do something lengthy and boring because it's just so easy to get into and make you feel the good-goods. when i used to flyer for a living shifts started going much faster after i had this album to get me through it
apparently this album has a lot of 'cool' factor cos like six different tinder guys have complimented me on having it as some of the featured music on my profile and nobody ever says anything good about having neutral milk hotel up there
FAV TRACK: 9/10 (my most-played track of the entire year according to spotify)
THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS - I LIKE FUN
my initial reaction was fully WHO DOESN'T LIKE FUN but i also kinda see that this album could be kinda niche so maybe, some people don't like I Like Fun but most people do like FUN as a concept, a feeling, the experience of enjoying something trivially, yeah
i also absolutely blessed myself by going to see TMBG in october and they played so many absolute bangers from their ridiculously wondrously large back-catalogue i genuinely have no idea if they played more than one or two songs from this album? the gig was sick it was SEATED and NO CHILDREN and fancy as hell (it was in the barbican so the sound was also AMAZING because hell yeah purpose-built spaces)
FAV TRACK: probably MCCAFFERTY'S BIB? is this a left-field choice? i just love it
DIRTY PROJECTORS - LAMP LIT PROSE
honor you're a FAKE you're a FRAUD you've only listened to this album like two times
that may be true but i just really wanted to include dirty projs on this list they're gonna be there eternally in my heart and look how nice the album art is i can smell the flower-bits and maybe that's just the actually dying flowers on my kitchen counter right now but i can smell it and look how nice the red blue almost-connection is look at it okay OKAY are we COOL? ARE WE COOL

thinking about when i went to the yayoi kusama show and she had a painting with a red blob and a blue blob as the focus and all i could think about was this band
FAV TRACK: ZOMBIE CONQUEROR
CANNONBALL STATMAN - MODERN ELEPHANTS
if you're not AWARE of the beautiful lo-fi folk-punk of cannonball statman by now where have you BEEN open yer little eyes/ears and get learning
we met at a show in the basement of a semi-abandoned building full of mould and sharp corners and that first impression has lingered and proven itself apt over the past couple of years
constantly impressing, modern elephants is just as wonderful as the previous offerings. makes me feel warm and buzzy but also so, so so sad
FAV TRACK: NEON CLOWN AVENUE
ANNA CALVI - HUNTER
oh my god this album THIS ALBUM!!!! like i know this is in no particular order but this is probably. the closest thing i will get to a number one, you didn't hear that from me
this album makes me feel so sexy and powerful and i know some of the lyrics are like, a little bit basic ass 'what if, woman were man' but GENDER IS COMPLICATED OKAY AND EVERYONE STARTS SOMEWHERE and some of it is just really sexy???? like really sexy
this album is hot, hot shit, and i mean that in the best way possible not that it's a steaming pile but like HOT SHIT like the BEST KIND of hot shit you could just eat it all up (not like that)
i was introduced to anna calvi when she performed with amanda palmer at the bowie prom in 2016 and basically, what you should take from this page is that SEEING MUSIC LIVE IS SO DAMN IMPORTANT
FAV TRACK: DON'T BEAT THE GIRL OUT OF MY BOY
MOUNT EERIE - NOW ONLY
aaaaaaahhhhhhh holy fuck i love CRYING! a stunning stunning follow up to A Crow Looked At Me and again such a real real exploration of possibly the deepest grief a human being is capable of
i think a lot about how publicly exploring emotions can be a kind of catharsis, a way of processing and dealing with things when the person you would generally process them with is no longer around, the latter fact often being the catalyst for the very public exploration in the first place
this album is beautiful and i almost feel like i shouldn't be talking about it because it's so personal but it's public-personal, existing in that grey space people have started building their entire lives in
FAV TRACK: CROW, PT. 2
